A probable non-avian theropod pellet from the Xiagou Formation

下沟组疑似源自非鸟兽脚类恐龙的反吐食团

Abstract:

An unusual cluster of ornithuromorph bones preserved in an oval-shaped organic residue was recovered from the Changma locality of the Lower Cretaceous Xiagou Formation. Based on its oval outline, the presence of both broken and articulated elements, and Optical Photothermal Infrared (O‑PTIR) spectral data indicating the preservation of organic residues, we interpret this new specimen, IVPP V34827, as a probable pellet, possibly cast by a medium-sized non-avian theropod, and containing skeletal remains that belong to Gansus. To date, the only documented non-avian theropod from the Xiagou Formation is Jian changmaensis, a microraptorine dromaeosaurid. Therefore, we suggest Jian as a potential producer of the pellet described here, based on its size and the documented diets of other microraptorines, and hypothesize that at least some members of Microraptorinae cast pellets. This new pellet specimen thus provides valuable evidence for understanding the trophic relationships in the Early Cretaceous Changma ecosystem.

摘要:

在甘肃昌马地区下白垩统下沟组发现一件新化石标本IVPP V34827,其中若干今鸟型类骨骼聚集保存于椭圆形的深色有机质残留物中。根据其椭圆形的轮廓、骨骼内容物的关节、破损和错位状态、以及光热红外(O-PTIR)光谱数据显示的有机质残留,推测这件新标本为反吐食团,可能由某种中等体型的非鸟兽脚类恐龙反吐出难以消化的食物残渣所形成,而其中包含的骨骼遗骸属于甘肃鸟。迄今为止,下沟组唯一有记录的非鸟恐龙为“昌马鹣龙” (Jian changmaensis),属于驰龙科小盗龙亚科。基于其体型及其他小盗龙亚科成员已有的食性记录,鹣龙可能是该食团的潜在制造者,而这也指示至少部分小盗龙亚科成员存在反吐食团行为的可能性。由此,这件新的食团标本为理解早白垩世昌马地区生态系统中的营养关系提供了新的证据。
