Pikes (Esocidae) are freshwater fishes now dwelling in northem hemisphere, most of them in cold waters south to the polar circle. The farnily contains only one genus (Esox) with five Recent species. Among them two appear in China, one (Esox reicherti) in the northeastem part of China, in the Amur, Sungaria and Wusuli rivers' valley; the other (E. lucius) in the Ertys River in Xinjiang, northwestem China (Meng et al., 1995). The finds of the late Cretaceous, Paleocene and Eocene pikes were so far restricted to North America although their distribution becarne much wider starting fmm the Oligocene (Cavender et al. 1970; Sychevskaya, 1974, 1976; Gaudant, 1978, 1987; Wilson, 1980, 1981, 1984; Wilson et al., 1992; Grande, 1999). mms, the fossil pike described in this paper is the first discovery of its kind fmrn the early Eocene (or late Paleocene) outside of North America. The specimens of pikes described in this paper were collected from the Member 2 of the HuangXian Formation in Wali Coal Mine, Huangxian County, Longkou, Shandong Province (Fig. l). No remains of vertebrates other than fish were found from the Huangxian Formation. Its correlation with the Wutu Formation in the nearby Wutu Basin was based on pollen (Paraalnipollenites-Betulaepollenites plicoides-Polypodiaceaesporites assemblage) and ostracods (e. g. Eucypris wutuensis) found in both formations. The age of the Wutu Formation has been considered as early Eocene by the findings of Homogalax wutuensis and Heptodon niushanensis (Chow and Li, 1965). A big variety of fossil ma.rnrnals belonging to several big groups were discovered recently from the Wutu Formation. Based on the study of the phylogeny of these groups combined with paleobiogeographic, paleoclimatic and biostratigraphic studies of North America and East Asia some researchers suggest the possibility of the age of the Wutu Formation as late Paleocene (Beard and Wang, 1995; Tong and Dawson, 1995; Beard, 1998; Beard and Dawson, 1999). Associated with the pike were disarticulated bones of amiids which are under description by the present authors.

The Lower Devonian strata of the Wenshan Distinct in southeastem Yunnan are well exposed and can be subdivided into Posongchong, Pojiao and Bajiaoqing formations in ascending Older. As a typical non-marine stratum, the Posongchong Formation bears abundant fossils of plants, spores and early vertebrates, including antiarchs, sarcopteryglans and galeaspids such Kwangnanaspis subtriangularis (Cao, 1979), Gantarostrataspis gengi, (Wang and Wang, 1992) and Macrothyraspis longicornis (Pan, 1992) . Recently, new galeaspid specimens were collected from the lower part of the Posongchong Formation in Gumu, Wenshan (Fig. 1). They are referred to Wenshanaspis zhichangensis gen. et sp. nov., Sanqiaspis rostrata (Liu, 1975) and M. longicornis (Pan, 1992) respectively. All of these fossils show that the Posongchong Formation is of Pragian in age, like the Xujiachong Formation in Qujing, eastern Yunnan and the Pingyipu Formation in Jiangyou, Sichuan. Gantarostrataspis gengi and Sanqiaspis rostrata exclusively found in these three regions indicate their biogeographic connection.

The first Triassic sauropterygian to be described from China was Keichousaurus hui (Young, 1958) found in Xingyi, Guizhou. Shingyisaurus unexpectus, another saumpterygian found in Xingyi, was referred to the Simosauridae by Young (1965). It was identified as Nothosaurus or a closely related genus, and the name Shingyisaurus unexpectus was considered a nomen dubium (Rieppel, 1998). Here we report a well-preserved specimen from Xingyi, Guizhou Province. It represents the undoubted specimen and a new species of Inriosaurus ever found outside western Tethyan faunal province.

Hyracolestes fossil of Micmptemodontidae was found in Qianshan Basin in the past (Qiu and Li, 1977). The new material here described from the san-le basin may belong to the same family but differs from taxa within the family found both in this basin and other regions.

Many Middle Eocene mammalian fossils were found in Huoshipo, Yuanqu Basin, Shanxi Province in recent years (Huang et al., 1999; 2001). Among these, Propterodon remain of Creodonta is reported in the present paper.

A new species of Eomyodon, E.dangheensis,is described based on specimens discovered from the late Oligocene in the Danghe area, Gansu, China. Its main features are: cheek teeth brachydont; lower cheek teeth with posterosinusid; p4 with distinct protostylid and without anteroconid or anterolophid; ml/2 with free anterolophid, long mesolophid, lingually open synclinids, well-developed synclinid IV; ml/2 with posterior crest of paracone, long and straight mesoloph, long and closed syncline II, and long sinus. Pseudotheridomys asiazicus Wang and Emry, 1990, is transferred to Eomyodon (E. asiaticus) because its cheek teeth, except V 9575, are more similar to Eomyodon rather than to Pseudotheridomys. V9575 is tentatively retained as Pseudotheridomys sp. It is evident that Eomyodon known in Europe occurred and diversified in Asia in late Oligocene, but has not ever been reported from North America. Thus, the exchange of Eomyodon took only place between Asia and Europe in late Oligocene.

In 1993, Mr. Su Yangzheng sent Wang Shitao some fish fossils collected from the uppermost part of the Lower Heitai Formation of Early Devonian in Mishan and Baoqing counties, Eastern Heilongjiang Province, Northeastern China. The four plates were collected from Baoqing County. The internal mould of the plate A might be the anterior dorso-lateral plate, the exact place of plate B is not clear, and there are no depressions of overlapped area shown on the internal moulds between A and B (Fig. 1,1). The specimen of plate C is an incomplete plate, the ornamentation is presented by the irregular and round tubercles on it (Fig. l, 2), it may be the extralateral plate. The ornamentation of plate D is shown by the tubercles and worm-form and the short ridge from the mid-plate to the posterior margin (Fig. l,3), it may be the mixilateral plate. The specimen plate E of Mishan County may be an external mould of the posterior ventro-lateral plate. The anterior margin is pointing anteriorly and the overlapped area is obvious, the posterior margin is straight, and the lateral ridge is very clear (Fig. 1, 4). All these plates should be referred to the Placodermi, and may belong to different forms of ?Antiarcha. Hou and Boucot (1990) has presented the Balkhash-Mongolia-Okhotsk Region of the Old World Realm in the Devonian, and the Mishan-Baoqing area should be referred to the region. But the fish fossils in Mishan-Baoqing area cannot be compared with the fish fossils of Kazakhstan and South China, particularly since the specimens are incomplete plates.
